What Noises Do Rabbits Make?

She woke up in the forest, cold and afraid. She wasn't quite sure what she was afraid of, but the fear was most definitely there. Maybe it was because it was dark. Perhaps it was due to the strange animal noises that echoed throughout. But more than likely, she was afraid because she was all alone with nowhere else to go.

A young man nearby suddenly heard a strange noise. It sounded like a high-pitched furnace, or even the static noise of a computer humming. This bewildered the young man greatly; how could any of the aforementioned objects possibly function in a forest, of all places?

The noise was actually coming from a nearby rabbit. Truly, rabbits hardly ever make any noise, which is why no one really knows what kind of a noise they make. In fact, it's all one big conspiracy. Rabbits purposely don't make noises so that they can forever keep the secret of exactly what kind of noises rabbits actually make. Cats meow, dogs bark, horses neigh. Rabbits hum. But they don't want you to know that.

The one rabbit in question was a rebel, a fugitive, cast out by his own kind because he wanted to liberate his species from the tyranny of having to keep their voices a secret. He believed that the rabbit voice was beautiful, even musical, and wanted to show it off to the whole world. But alas, this only enraged the remainder of the rabbit population. And thus, this infidel became an outcast.

So the rabbit hummed musically throughout the night, hoping the rest of the world would hear him and praise his beautiful voice. But alas, he was instead plucked off the ground by a large owl, to be taken away and eaten.

The young man suddenly heard the humming stop. He shrugged it off, and continued walking to wherever it was he was going before.

But as he walked, he tripped over the cold, lonely, scared woman from the first paragraph of this story.

They looked at each other and fell instantaneously in love, even though neither had any idea what the other person was like. Their bad habits, their tastes in music, their favourite foods, and even their physical appearances (considering that it was quite dark out) were, for the most part, a mystery. Nevertheless, they eventually got married and lived together in a nice house in the suburbs with seven children and a pair of Siamese cats conjoined at the tail.

In the meantime, a hungry owl sat perched inside a dark cave, about to enjoy the first decent meal he'd be having in ages...
