Chivalry is Reviewed

November 9th, 2007

The first-ever (I think) review of Chivalry is Not Dead has been posted by my anonymous musician/philosopher friend over at MusEditions. Unlike the majority of feedback I’ve gotten about the game so far, s/he (I’m not exactly sure at this point) really really seems to get what it was all about, and this pleases me; as I briefly mentioned in my last post, I was worried that the real meaning behind the game went completely over people’s heads. However, now I can rest assured that at least someone got it, so it’s all good. Woot.

Somewhat relatedly, yesterday, I managed to get around to playing a little Flash game called Move or Die (which was apparently released more than two years ago, but somehow got missed by me). It’s more like a movie with branching paths than anything else, and sort of does similar things to what Chivalry attempts, yet it’s more goal-oriented in that there are clear-cut good and bad endings rather than slightly more ambiguous ones, and seems to be a teaching tool of sorts in the art of negotiation and persuasion. Still, I do think it’s a good step in the kinds of directions my work is heading in, and I like the art direction too; it reminds me very much of the crazy rotoscopery of Waking Life, one of my favourite movies. Definitely recommended playing.

Thanks, Deirdra, for deeming me able to get it. You did give us hints, you know, in your articles and posts, so I was somewhat predisposed to look for moral ambiguity. Yet, the nature of the fairy-tale like quest with choices at every turn surprised me. I especially appreciated your dialog choices in this area. I tried to put myself in Phlegmwad’s place (admittedly not an easy thing) and imagine how I would talk to people.
Yeah, I’m pretty much anonymous online, not so much in “real” life.
I’m working through MOVE OR DIE at your suggestion. Very Interesting–thanks for letting us know!

I also wanted to say that this game and the pigeons game are very inspiring (The moment I finished the game I went to create another game of my own).
