Lately, I’ve been reading many people saying that [insert name of favourite amateur adventure game without voice acting here] would have been way better if it had voice acting. I, personally, don’t understand this huge fuss about the need for voices, seeing as I’m the type who can read faster than the characters speak and often end up right-clicking to skip the speech prematurely, so it ends up sounding like “Guybrush, I-” “Stop, you’re tickling-” “Oh no, it’s the Ghost Pirate LeCh-” … you get the picture.
However, for those of you who firmly believe that games MUST have voice acting, and that a game with bad voices is better than a game with no voices at all, I have a solution for you that’s a thousand times more effective and fruitful than the usual bug-the-game-developer-until-he/she/it-adds-voices strategy. Without further ado, I present to you… Adding Voices to Adventure Games: The Deirdra Kiai Productions Way!

Oh goodness gracious me! A couple of days ago, I was browsing around my local EB Games, when I came across Toontown Online. Now, despite the fact that I don’t really buy games these days, much less MMORPGs, I just had to buy this one because it was cheap ($19.99 Canadian is pretty cheap for computer games these days) and its graphics had that certain cartoony charm that reminded me of Stupid Invaders. I played a bit of it today, and my first impression is that it’s a cute timewaster that I’ll probably play a lot when I’m bored and don’t really want to think for a while.
So, what else is new, you’re probably asking. I’m back at school, obviously. I’m learning how to program in OpenGL in one of my classes, which is cool. I’m still progressing on TGTTPOACS, of course, having finished yet another ending, pitting me at about… 75% completion? These days, the fact that I can actually see the end in sight instead of having an “oh no, I have so much more to do” mindset makes me quite optimistic. Then again, it won’t be long till assignments and midterms begin to swallow me whole again…

In a few hours, I will be back at school again, meaning that this is the end of my winter break. I have therefore decided to write up a little summary of all the adventure games - amateur and commercial - that I have played during said winter break, followed by my comments on each.[1]

Footnotes:
- I’ve said on many occasions that I never have time to play games these days because I’ve been at school/working/creating a game of my own. However, not having to do the first two things has ended up freeing a large chunk of my time, and playing games actually has the remarkable effect of speeding up the development of the third thing. ↩
